Welcome 7th grade students!

Dear Seventh Grader,
            Welcome to Middle School and the school year of 2020-2021. I hope that you had a wonderful summer. My name is Mr. Fleming and I will be your science teacher this year. For some of you I will be your homeroom teacher. I am looking forward to meeting all of you for an amazing year! During this time of social distancing I want to ensure you that you will continue to have access to high-quality lessons, activities and assignments. I plan to deliver instruction through a virtual learning environment. WE will be successful this year.

What will you need to do, to be successful in my class during remote learning?:
  • Students login to each of their Microsoft Teams class on a daily basis.
  • Students complete all required assignments and submit these as directed by
    me.
  • Students watch the videos posted each week on Microsoft Teams in their entirety.
  • Students attend scheduled live Zoom meetings.
  • Students email me if they have any questions.

What is a homeroom teacher, you ask?

You will be spending a large part of your day with me. I will also be your homeroom and science teacher. As a homeroom class, we will work together to learn about empathy, problem solving, and how to stay organized. I’m very excited to meet and get to know each one of you! Before we meet, let me tell you a little bit about me. This will be my 6th year at Roosevelt Junior High. My wife and I love to try new restaurants, go to concerts, sporting events, and travel. This summer we spent lots of time outside, at the pool, and having summer fun! I have three children, Bryce, and my twins Brock, and Lana

         Our classroom number is 230. Please have all of your supplies, including a separate notebook for science. Don’t forget to label all of them with your first and last name. We will have an incredible year together in seventh grade. You probably have many questions, but don’t worry I will be there to help you this year.
Feel free to e-mail me with any questions before or after we meet.

Sincerely,

Mr. Fleming

Classroom Rules

Be Respectful
– Please show respect towards both of the teachers, your peers, and any other individuals that are part of the classroom community every day. In addition to working with the teachers, students will regularly work together on labs, sharing ideas, and a variety of group work throughout the school year. Successful collaboration requires respect from all who are involved. Lastly, please respect the classroom and all of its contents. Your teachers will work hard to earn your respect, and we hope that you will try to earn ours as well.

Be Responsible
– As a second-year middle school student, it is expected that students will act in a responsible manner. The nature of this course and the grading system in place (described below) requires that students take ownership for their assignments, behavior, and seek assistance as needed.

Be Safe
– Science classrooms have the potential to pose many safety hazards towards students and teachers. If all of the guidelines and protocols for safety are followed, potentially harmful accidents will be avoided.

Be Prepared
– Please arrive on time to class each day with a writing pencil, appropriate materials, and a readiness to learn.
Curriculum:
The areas of study for this year are taken from the Common Core Standards and NGSS for the 7th grade.
Notebooks:
Each student is expected to have a science notebook.
Time will be spent in class discussing how to organize and maintain this notebook.
Grading:
  • Assessments (30% of grade)- Includes quizzes, tests.

  • Projects (50% of grade)- Includes any work done independently, with teacher guidance, or completed as a group.  This could include class work, activities or lab reports.

  • Independent Practice (20% of grade)- Includes any work completed independently by students with minimal guidance required from the teacher.  May include some class work and homework.  Homework is assigned when necessary to reinforce a concept learned in class.  There will be no regularly scheduled homework so it’s important to keep current with assignments.
Grading Scale:
A=100-90
B=89-80
C=79-70
D=69-60
Below 60 is failing.
Absent work:
When absent, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain and make up all work missed.
Classroom Expectations
  • Students are expected to be in their seats, working on their warm-up entrance question, when class begins.
  • If you need to leave your seat for any reason, raise your hand and ask permission.
  • There will be classroom situations where raising your hand to speak is not necessary.  But, as a general rule, raise your hand and wait to be called on if you would like to speak.
  • Students are expected to be on task at all times.
  • Respect the teacher, other students and the learning environment at all times.
  • listen and follow directions
  • no talking out of turn
  • stay in seats
  • no outside food/candy, lotion, make-up, sprays
  • take notes
  • keep your area neat and clean

Class Social Contract

A key to building an atmosphere of trust in my class is the social contract. With the social contract in place, everyone knows the rules; what is acceptable and what is not, as well as the consequences. This common understanding provides you the foundation for positive interaction with me, the teacher, as well as, with each other. In this environment, you will be empowered because you experience encouragement and support.
Describe how I will treat you...
Describe how we will treat each other...

Describe you the student will treat each me the teacher ...
